When It Rains, It Pours: All-Season Fishing at Winnipesaukee

When It Rains, It Pours: All-Season Fishing at Winnipesaukee

Some people might think of the rainy season as being bad weather, but when it comes to fishing in New Hampshire, there’s no such thing as a bad season. People come here from all over the world to fish these waters in the spring, summer, fall, and winter. New Hampshire ice fishing is world-renowned, as the annual ice fishing derby is a popular contest that brings amateur and experienced anglers to try their luck. Winter fishing supplies can be rented for those who come here on the fly, along with Bob House rentals for those who want a little reprieve from the winter weather.

While you can plan your Lake Winnipesaukee vacation around a certain type of fish that you want to catch, you don’t have to worry that there won’t at least be something worth hooking while you are here. Rain or shine, snow or ice, there’s much to do when you come to New Hampshire. You can even rent custom fishing rods and reels, purchase local live bait, and check out our wide selection of lures – whatever you need we have it at the NH Hole in the Wall. Shop online ahead of your trip for anything from indoor games to coolers, clothing to DVDs, cribbage boards to custom corn hole games, and everything in between.

Seasonal Fishing Information
Before you visit any place new, make sure to check on fishing regulations for specific species. For example, there are certain times of year that areas of the lake are closed to fishing in order to support the spawning of local species. With regard to Lake Winnipesaukee vacation fishing, between October 16 and December 31, fishing is not allowed in certain areas. However, it is open to fishing everywhere else. The areas that are restricted during this period include within 500 feet of the following:

  • Gunstock River
  • Melvin River
  • Merrymeeting River
  • Mink Brook
  • Poor Farm Brook
  • Smith River
  • PLUS within 500 feet of the Main Street Bridge in Wolfeboro

In addition, there are two areas of the lake that are closed to all fishing between October 1 and March 31, which include the area of Paugus Bay between the railroad trestle and the Lakeport Dam in Laconia, as well as the open water area at Weirs Channel. Fishermen who are trolling can only use on artificial bait, one fly, one tandem fly, or one live bait per rod, and can only use one single hook point with the bait. Remember, these regulations are in place to protect Lake Winnipesaukee fishing year-round. There are still plenty of areas on the lake to explore during these restricted periods.

Make sure to ask when you come in for your winter fishing supplies or custom fishing rods and reels about any additional safety cautions or restrictions on fishing if you are new to the area. You can also visit the New Hampshire Department of Fish & Game website at http://wildlife.state.nh.us to review all of the information available about fishing in New Hampshire waters.
