The Meredith Ice Fishing Derby
One of the big attractions for ice fishing in the Wolfeboro area is the Meredith Ice Fishing Derby. This is by far the biggest winter event in the local New Hampshire area. Put on by the Meredith Rotary Club, it is a full weekend of fishing, fun and big prizes, plus a lot of local fame for the big winners who get their catch hung on the Wall of Fame. Bring the whole family, as this carnival-like event takes place out on the ice, transforming the landscape into a sea of bob houses and seasonal vendors. It has to be seen in person to be believed.
The fishing derby brings a huge sense of competition, so even those who are new to New Hampshire ice fishing get in on the fun. Ice fishing tackle can be rented at the Hole in the Wall bait and tackle shop, as well as other supplies for ice fishing in Wolfeboro and the surrounding area. Prices change, so it’s a good idea to check in with the locals ahead of time, but in 2016 it was $30 for tickets to compete in the ice fishing derby and tickets could be purchased at local bait shops, as well as at the derby headquarters in Meredith.
The cost of tickets goes toward the prizes, but it also goes toward keeping up with the extensive fish stocking that is required for the large bodies of water in the New Hampshire Lakes Region. Prizes in 2016 were $15,000 for First Prize, $5,000 for Second Prize, and $3,000 for Third Prize.
