Boating Safety in New Hampshire

You might be wondering if you need a license to operate a boat on New Hampshire state waters. The most recent law, which was enacted in 2002, requires that all persons possess a certificate of “boating safety education” if they operate a motorboat or other motorized vessel that has a power motor exceeding 25 HP. So if you rent a 25 HP vessel for recreational water sports, such as Lake Winnipesaukee water skiing, you won’t need a safety certificate. However, if you want a bit more speed for your recreation boat rentals, you should look into getting the certificate.

If you have proof of a NASBLA-approved boating safety certificate from another state or accepted United States agency, then you do not have to get the certificate of boating safety in New Hampshire. You can also get a temporary 14-day certificate from the New Hampshire Department of Safety. You must produce a certificate that shows you have passed the local test or that you have a valid and accepted license from another state or agency in order to rent a boat on Lake Winnipesaukee. Your best bet is to get a permanent certificate from the Department of Safety, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, or US Power Squadrons ahead of your visit. Courses are available in all 50 states, and the first step of the process can be completed online.
